SPEAKER: Susan S. Chavez

“Overview on The SBA Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract Program”

An overview of the Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract Program will be presented by Susan S. Chavez.  Ms. Chavez will be providing information about the program, where to register and eligibility criteria.  The Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program provides equal access to federal contracting opportunities for women-owned small businesses (WOSB) and economically disadvantaged women-owned small businesses (EDWOSBs).  The program allows contracting officers to set aside specific federal contracts for WOSBs and EDWOSBs.  

Susan Chavez is a native New Mexican.  Ms. Chavez is the Deputy District Director of the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) New Mexico District Office.  She assists the District Director in managing the delivery of the SBA’s financial assistance, management counseling and business development programs for the State of New Mexico .  

Susan began her career with SBA in 1979.  Preceding her promotion she served as the Assistant District Director for Entrepreneurial Development/Supervisory Business Development Specialist.  Ms. Chavez has a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix . Currently, in addition to supervising the Finance and Entrepreneurial Development staffs within the District, she also oversees the Entrepreneurial Development Program in New Mexico .  This program serves as the marketing arm of the SBA providing information to the small business community on available services and programs of the agency.  

Ms. Chavez also serves as the Small Business Development Center Project Officer, serving as the SBA liaison with the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network which consists of the lead center and 20 centers located statewide.  During her tenure with SBA, she has also served as the District Office Public Information Officer, the SCORE Liaison, the Women’s Business Ownership Representative, and the District Office Technical Representative, overseeing the SBA-designated Women Business Centers.  

Susan has been recognized with numerous honors and awards that she has achieved throughout her professional career. A few of them include the Lifetime Small Business Advocacy Award presented by the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network, Los Alamos National Laboratory and the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services; Meritorious Service Award for Region VI given by the SBA; Distinguished Service Award presented by the National SCORE Office, and; the Federal Executive Board Award  - “Service Above Self – Federal Supervisor/Manager of the Year.”

Ms. Chavez has a total of 32 years of experience at the SBA and 33 years total federal service.  Ms. Chavez and her husband, Frederick, reside in Albuquerque , New Mexico .
